Is Modern Family a good show?

Main Post:

Idk, I always thought Modern Family was a little big bang theory-ish, ie popular af but not good...but i have now been told by people I trust that modern family is as good as the office/parks and rec/30 rock/seinfeld/community...pantheon shows...are they right?

Top Comment: It’s a second tier comedy (your 1st tier were spot on), but it’s near the top of second tier, especially the first 4 seasons or so.

modern family secretly stopped being a comedy after season 5 but no one wanted to admit it

Main Post:

before you want to come at me let me state my point. By season 6, modern family wasn't really funny anymore, it was coasting on the rhythm of jokes, not actual humor. The punchline became predictatble, the characters turned into a caricatures and most episodes were just reheated versions or earlier seasons. Yes, there were still a few standout episodes here and there, moments that reminded us of the show's earlier brilliance but they were rare sparks in the show that had mostly lost it's comedic fire.

But because the show had already built this image of being "heartwarming", it disguised its creative burnout behind forced sentimentality. while it's not entirely a bad thing, it just.. changed. No one wanted to admit it because we were all too attached to the idea of the show to see what it had become.

And just to be clear I say all this as someone who loves this show, from season 1 all the way through season 11. This isn't hate. It's just an honest look at how a brilliant comedy slowly transformed into something else entirely.

Top Comment: To each their own, humour itself is subjective so there’s no point in debating whether or not it’s truly funny. Undeniably a divine show, that’s for certain

Would it have been cool to see Maddie have a sister come in to be a big bad because of what she did to their dad? Or am I tripping lol because I’m watching Modern family and I’m like am I crazy or do Maddie and Claire look like sisters

Phil Dunphy is the worst main character in Modern Family.

Main Post:

I really can’t understand the popularity of this character. Most of the characters are just inherently funny and enjoyable to watch as part of the overall story of the episode. Phil’s “funny moments rely fully on either forced unfunny dad jokes or him creeping on Gloria. He’s an annoying bastard and the show would have been better without him.

Are we talking about the same Philip Humphrey Dunphy?

A possible unpopular opinion on shows like Modern Family

Main Post:

So I do like modern family. I watched the first few seasons more than once but, one thing that really bugs me is how they treat each other. The show more or less revolves around lies and manipulation. Other shows are like this too but, this one seems to be the worse because every episode seems to have that at its center.

I get that every episode they go back to showing how much they love each other but it's still in my opinion toxic. The worse thing about it is, because people watch it they think that's how a family should be. I more or less grew up with this as the norm so it especially bothers me. These days when I have potential partners in my life or friends who do this I am quick to cut them off.

The whole idea is the home should be a place of solace. You shouldn't have to be on guard around your friends either. However in shows like that it seems to be an extension of highschool bullshit or office politics. Again I get that's how they make the show interesting but they go way too far with it in my opinion.

Anyone else feel this way?

Why you should watch The Middle over Modern Family (Rant)

Main Post:

Okay, so maybe you don't have to watch one over the other, but I wanted the title to get your attention. If you want, watch both, as long as you watch The Middle.

This has been bugging me for a few days, so I just wanted to get my thoughts out there. Because there is an amazing show that comes on right before Modern Family, and it doesn't get any of the acclaim the latter does, thought it's just as good, if not better. Now, this isn't coming out of nowhere. The Golden Globe nominations came out, and though they're obviously just one dumb awards show, their choices still mean something. As do the Emmys. And in every awards show, the actors of Modern Family get all of the nominations and a lot of the wins in what I think is an undeserving victory.

I'm not saying Modern Family is a bad show. Yes, it's funny. Yes, it's filled with talented and funny people. But Modern Family isn't real. It's a parody of suburbia. You've got three families, each with their own quirk. You've got the fairly stereotyped gay couple, the perfect "traditional" family with the cooky father and overcontrolling mother, and you've got the family that doesn't really make sense. And these people all live in their bubble where things end up working out in the end, and money and success seems to fall into their laps. To those people who like an escapist show, it's great. But it shouldn't get awards just because it shows people living their crazy American dream. Because other shows deserve those awards.

Now, we've got The Middle. It isn't perfect either, but it also has a great cast. Patricia Heaton is amazing, and Neil Flynn is good as ever. And you know what? Their child/young adult actors are just as talented as the ones on Modern Family. And they aren't as damn one dimensional. When they fight, their fights seem real. When they do stuff, you cringe because of how horrible and real it is. And to make it better, the Heck family is living the life that most Americans are. They don't have a lot of money. They scrape by on what they've got, and neither parent works a glamorous job. They don't claim to be good people, but they work with what they've got, and manage to do okay. But you know what? Its funny and real. Because the Heck family is as crazy as the Dunphy family, yet you can actually relate a little more to the Hecks, because they aren't living in a perfect little suburbia where the biggest problem is a traffic sign.

And in the Heck family, if their eldest son got kicked out of college, it would mean a whole lot more than how Modern Family handled it. I'm not American, but I do know that schooling costs a fortune there, and as a university student myself, the fact that Haley got a slap on the wrist for getting kicked out infuriates me. For most families, that would be a huge fucking deal, but she just moves back home and moves on with her life. If that happened to the Hecks in the Middle, not only would they be royally fucked monetarily, but it would reverberate through the lives of the whole family, and Axl would have hell to pay.

That's just one example of how Modern Family bugs me. It was written by rich people for rich people. And it constantly gets nominated by even more rich people, because it's really tackling the big issues, like gay parenting (very one-dimensional, by the way) and a relationship with a bit of an age difference (big deal). Meanwhile, shows like The Middle, which, though aren't paving any new grounds in television, are still presenting more of a reality, and having its equality talented actors ignored because of it.

Now, I know I'll receive some opposition and responses against what I said, and I welcome them. I'm sure I missed something, or did something wrong, but hey, I wouldn't be submitting this if I didn't welcome some discussion.

TL;DR: The Middle's equally talented cast tackles some relatable, important issues. Modern Family is fluff

I've never seen the Middle, but I'll have to give it a shot. I've been getting frustrated with how cookie-cutter Modern Family is becoming, especially Mitch and Cam's relationship. Literally every episode:

Cam: I'm overly confident about a special ability and/or trait that I possess.

Mitch: Feigned support!

Mitch (in private confessional): I actually really dislike Cam's special ability/trait, or I think he's delusional for believing it exists.

Episode happens. Cam's special ability/trait saves the day OR ruins the day.

Mitch: I'm so sorry I doubted you! Wow we are so in love despite the fact that I am clearly extremely bothered by the confidence that is constantly falling out of your butt.

Cam: Oh it's okay, let me dress up like clown some more and hope that ties it all together.

snooze
